Innovators in Occupational Exposure Biomonitoring
Many industrial chemicals pose serious health risks at
the workplace. Long and short-term exposure to these chemicals
can be determined by biological monitoring - the measurement
of chemicals (or their breakdown products) in exposed
individuals.
Biomonitoring reflects the total uptake of the chemical
by inhalation, ingestion or absorption through the skin.
However, the use of this technique has to date been severely
limited by the cost and complexity of test methods through
laborious physico-chemical techniques by Gas Chromatography-Mass
Spectrometry (GCMS).
In collaboration with AB Biomonitoring Ltd, UK,
Chemlab has the capability to offer occupational exposure
monitoring to chemicals in the work place such as Benzene
(as urinary S-PMA), Ethylene Oxide (as urinary N-2,
hydroxyethyl-valine),
Propylene Oxide (as urinary N-2, hydroxpropyl-valine) and etc.
Our principal have developed innovative techniques
which completely overcome the previous restrictions. This will enable a
wider application of biomonitoring as both a monitoring
and survey tool and environmental exposures
and encourage the deployment of best HSE working
practice.
Chemlab's core activities in collaboration with AB
Biomonitoring Ltd, UK are:
- Research and Development
Current research programmes focus upon industrial chemicals
and environmental pollutants with known adverse health
effects. Using our unique know-how we select biomarkers
and develop simple rapid and cost-effective assays.
Contract research is undertaken.
- Testing
We offer a routine assay service for monitoring occupational
exposure. We have an internal quality assessment programme
and are introducing an ISO 9002 approved management
system to ensure the provision of an efficient, high-quality
service. The easy-to-use assay service is fully supported
through our consultancy service.
- Consultancy
Carefully designed screening programmes are required
in order to derive maximum value and meaningful results
from Chemlab. Through our consultancy service
we advise on prescribed protocols of sample collection,
analytical methods and the interpretation of results.
We are able to provide this complete package because
of our unique qualifications in terms of analytical
expertise, industrial experience and academic contacts.
